What is Integrative Law?

Integrative law (sometimes also called holistic law) is an approach to practicing law that involves looking beyond your legal need or problem.  It addresses how that legal matter impacts the rest of your life—including mind, body and spirit.

As an integrative lawyer, I see my clients as whole, despite their legal dilemmas. I encourage them to consider their legal experience as an opportunity to learn, grow, heal and find meaning in their lives.  I view my clients’ legal issues in the broader context of their lives. I may recommend including other disciplines or resources to facilitate resolution of the legal matter in a way that further promotes healing, growth, learning or transformation.

In a profession that values logic and analysis, I also bring my heart and creativity.  As an integrative lawyer, I work hard to facilitate a positive legal result, but also offer a chance for human connection.

You may hear people refer to integrative law by other terms, such as holistic, comprehensive,  or renaissance law; relationship-based lawyering; or transformational law.  Under the umbrella of integrative law, there are also many methods and practices, including restorative justice, collaborative law, therapeutic jurisprudence, and mediation, to name a few.  You can read more about all of these, as well as the history of the integrative law community at Cutting Edge Law.
